Assistant Minister Chen Jian Attends the National Meeting of International Contractors in Beijing

Beijing (July 27)--Ministry of Commerce hosted the national meeting of International Contractors in Beijing. Minister Bo pointed out that international contract had undergone tremendous progress in recent years and had become a major form of the “reaching out” strategy of Chinese economy. Chinese enterprises had produced 182.2 billion US dollars’ worth of international contracts by June, 2006. The value of new contracts during the first 6 months this year had jumped 35% to 31.1 billion US dollars.

International contractors are now facing rare opportunities. On the one hand, there exists a huge international market of project contract, with many countries holding a positive attitude towards cooperating with China; on the other hand, the comprehensive national strength of China and the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises are steadily growing, laying a solid foundation for expanding our reach in international market. International contractors are a critical force in this “reaching out” strategy, and also a key factor in the structural reform and economic growth of Chinese economy.

While asserting the importance of international contract, Minister Bo also put special emphasis on the orientation of contracting business. International contractors should actively explore technology-intense, lucrative industries, with equal attention on public projects of social significance. Also, the quality and safety principle should always figure large in international contract business.

Vice-Minister Wei Jiangguo chaired the meeting, and Assistant Minister Chen Jian attended and spoke at the meeting.
