Chen Jian: China would Further Expand Cooperation with African Nations in Telecommunication

Assistant Minister Chenjian expressed at China-African Nations Telecommunication Ministerial Seminar on De. 10 that China would further expand cooperation with African nations in telecommunication and support Chinese telecommunication enterprises to do business in Africa on the principle of equality and mutual benefit, pursuing practical results and mutual development.

Chen Jian said that in recent years, Chinese telecommunication made a great achievement and maintained a growth rate of over 20% for more than one decade without pause. In 2003, sales revenue in telecommunication manufacture in China amounted to RMB1.88 trillion, and production scale ranked No.3 in the world. He said that with the fast growth in bilateral trade between China and Africa, the cooperation in telecommunication would have a broad bright prospect.

Chen Jian positively appraised China-Africa trade and economic relations. He said that China-Africa trade and economic cooperation was in the stage of rapid, all-round and stable development. China signed bilateral trade agreements with 41 African nations and provided most-favoured-nation treatment to each other and developed with efforts the exports of Africa to China. In January through Oct., bilateral trade between China and Africa amounted to US$23.12 billion, up by 54.3% on a year-on-year basis. Trade deficit of China were US$1.16 billion. In the first 9 months, African FDI from China amounted to US$54.346 million. China encouraged and guide enterprises to cooperate with African nations through advanced technology and management experience to help African nations to improve the self-development capacity in economic structure. Chinese government took African as one of the important areas to assistant and provided various assistance for 53 African nations.

It was said that at present, China has started friendly cooperation with over 20 African nations in telecommunication, including technological service, equipment export and operation service etc. In the first 10 months, China exported US$317 million telecommunication products to African nations with a year-on-year increase of 51%.

The Seminar was the first ministerial conference held by China and African nations in telecommunication. Ministers, vice ministers and high-level officials of telecommunication from 11 African nations attended the opening ceremony.
