Chen Jian:Gwadar Port To Open By Dec

  

Chen Jian, Chinese assistant commerce minister, on Wednesday said the Chinese government had undertaken the Phase-I of Gwadar Port project to strengthen the ties between China and Pakistan.

Mr Jian said this during a meeting with Ports and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri. The visiting Chinese delegation headed by Mr Jian discussed the progress of development work at the Gwadar Port with Mr Ghauri. Mr Jian said that Chinese experts have been working round the clock to complete the project in the stipulated time. He added that the port would be ready for operation by December 18, 2004.

The Chinese minister thanked the Pakistan government for beefing up security for Chinese workers at Gwadar. He hoped that new avenues of business for locals would open on the completion of the port which would serve as a trade route for the Central Asian states. He added that the Gwadar Port would also serve significant strategic purposes. He assured Mr Ghauri that he would do his best to undertake the work of phase-II by the Chinese.
